NYC 20160811

August 11, 2016

Prepared for all potential delays, we arrived at the airport early and just happened to get the nice Customs agent at the airport.   Our flight was non-eventful which is best.  We did have to wait about 20 minutes for luggage, which really is not saying a lot.  We booked in advance a shuttle bus into New York and after some traffic arrived in the Big Apple.

It was hot, it was muggy, it was New York, it is Fabulous.  We arrived at our hotel, checked in and unpacked.  Our hotel is right at the tail end of Time Square which puts us in the middle of everything.  After a quick nap we were ready to hit the town, the town however was not as ready for us.  We went out for dinner after a quick nap to a cheap place and then wandered through Time Square.  Everywhere we seemed to walk was against the grain of human traffic, but that is what one expects in Time Square.  There is a set of stairs that you can sit on now just to view the area and the get the sights of all the lights and theatres and advertising.  We sat for a little while and just took in the amount of people that were out there and all that was going on.

After that we went back to the room, Trish needed a change of shoes already (not a good sign), we had a Vodka on the rocks and we were off again.  Our goal this time was to just wander down to the Empire State Building and then head back to the room.  As we were leaving we noticed it was raining slightly.  Being from Vancouver this was no big deal and we ventured off.  Adam found a pretzel stand along the way and crossed off one of his items off his New York list.  That pretzel was delicious, I think it may have to be a daily occurrence.   The rain increased and our walk turned into a game of 'pick the driest side of the street' and a version of Frogger where we would end up in Dry Zones.  We walked by the Empire State Building, about 20 minutes from our Hotel.  Trish dug out the Google Maps and decided we should Zag our way back to the hotel and walk by the Chrysler Building which we can kind of see from our hotel.

We stopped occasionally in our islands of dry zones as the rain continued, sometimes becoming lighter and sometimes all the rain would happen at once.  There were not many people out, but those that were had an instant camaraderie of need to be in a Dry Zone.    We made it back to our hotel and sill being on Vancouver time zone were out quite late for New York, many restaurants and bars were closed, but this is Thursday, and the weekend may prove different.
